Ah the occasional sweetness

Yesterday Chica was away with me when Niño went with A (my husband) to the bookmobile to return and check out some materials. Chica had given Niño instructions to check out a Dora DVD for her in addition to whatever else he checks out. I had my doubts whether he would care to remember mostly because his favorite pastime is to irritate her and hear her scream. He proved me totally wrong by going out of his way going through several titles and checking out Dora's Ballerina Adventures because Dora and Ballet happen to be Chica's two most favorite things these days. I wonder who was more delighted at his thoughtful action - Chica or me :) Cos I shall be feeding them both this very thought to avert several prospective battles in the coming few weeks ;)

Meal Times

...just got a tad bit easier these days. I keep my fingers and toes tightly crossed as I type this. Handing Vansh a worksheet he picks himself to work on - ranging from coloring to pre-reading, pre-math, mazes, basic crosswords has him busy working on those as I put in one morsel after another in his mouth.

The plus - he stays put and works.

The thrill - he is READING and doing a good job at it.

The bonus - Jiya wants to do the same and stays put for her meal too.

Sometimes you seem to have hit the JACKPOT while parenting!!! Amen to more such times!

Watch the video to get jealous if you have kids who run away when you try to feed them and just for fun if you are in the other minority category.

And tell me what are your tricks?

Heard yesterday ...

... as I entered the room after brushing my teeth and changing into my night dress, both the siblings lying down on the same pillow face to face with a smile and deep in conversation

Vansh - Jiya kaunsi kahaani sunaoon? (Jiya which story should I tell you?)

Jiya - aaannnn ..Giaff wali (aannn ..the Giaff one)

Vansh - Giraffe waali nahin aati (I don't know the Giraffe one)

Jiya - aaaannnn ...Monkey waali (annn ..the monkey one)

Vansh - monkey waali bhi nahin aati (I don't know that either)

Jiya - phir kaunsi aati hai (which one do you know then?) (this is where my jaw started to drop, she actually has the logic and the righht words to express that??!! when? where? how?)

Vansh - accha main monkey or metro train waali sunata hoon (Ok I'll tell you the monkey and metro train one) (oh yeah, you just have to meet Vansh for 5 minutes to realize thathe's obsessed with metro trains.)

And he then goes on to narrate a 2 line story where the monkey first boards the train to Ambience mall and then after having fun there boards it again to City Square mall. And is met with generous doses of boisterous emphatic laughter from the captive audience who can never awe her brother enough.

As the temperatures soar ...

... the siblings have a ball splashing water at each other in the bathroom and getting drenched. Another favorite that follows is running around the house in towels as mom happily clicks away. Ah the simple pleasures of life!!

Edited to add: After 3 harsh winters in Minnesota, March doesn't quite seem like it :) No one's complaining!

A new friend

We have a new friend these days. We like to share our food with her, we love it when she looks inside, at times just waiting there in the patio for us to come out and look at her, takes her hand to her heart and puts it there in acknowledgment. We spend so much time staring at her for the longest time nibbling away at the food, at times on the floor, at others on the ledge and best of all perched up on our cycle outside. Presenting to you our dear little squirrel named Roo :)

One of Vansh's favorite pastime ...

... looking at old pictures and recalling the incidents with a smile and lots of giggles;

one of mom's - Looking at that smiley lit up face, listening to those giggles and counting our blessings :)

The latest additions to Vansh's vocab ...

... are the words 'maintenance' and 'refreshing'. Impressive, huh!!

The other day, Vansh jiggled out of his room, balancing a kind of big car holding it with one hand and its remote tucked in beneath his arm and in a thick tone said to me, "Mummy, 'nemance' uncle hai Vansh, theek kar diya!" (Mom, I am the maintenance uncle and I have fixed it!) Apparently he was imitating an apartment maintenance guy who had come in the morning to look at the heating unit which was making some noise. The big guys in uniform are THE rockstars for our little guy :)

**************************************************************************************

The other craze is 'Moe Doodle' from the 'Doodlebops' and his act of pulling the rope in each episode which results in a big load of water landing on his head which he shakes off with a fervent nod and mouths 'Refreshing'! To be able to act the same way, Vansh demands the pail of water be emptied on his head with a thud and off he goes "Refreshing". My laugh is greeted with a sheepish "Funny guy"!!

He's our cute little funny guy indeed!! :)

A few samplers on Vansh's verbal platter

Scene - Jiya crying.

Vansh (in an absolute grown up tone) - Jiya क्यों रोती है? पापा, मम्मी, Vansh रोते हें? Hanh? (Why are you crying Jiya, Do papa, muumy or Vansh cry like that?)

******************************************************************************

Scene - Vansh snatching something from Jiya's hand

Mom (in a reprimanding tone, voice raised) - Vansh क्यों गन्दी बात कर रहा है? ऐसे Jiya के हाथ से छीनते हें? (Vansh why are you doing something wrong? Should you be snatching things from Jiya?)

Vansh (solemn tone) - Vansh को नहीं बात करनी। (Vansh doesn't want to talk)

2 minutes later

Vansh - Mummy, Doodlebops song चलाओ। (Mom, play Doodlebops song)

Mom - आप तो बात नहीं कर रहा था। (You said you were not talking)

Vansh - Sovy (for sorry). Doodlebops song चलाओ

****************************************************************************

Scene - All of us going in the car

Vansh (out of the blue) - Hello Arunabh! What you doing? 941-621. Okay! Ya! OK Bye!

Mom - Who are you talking to?

Vansh - Vansh meeting hai. Vansh saath Arunabh saath. (Vansh has a meeting with Arunabh)

Mom and dad laugh.

Vansh joins in and says - Funny Guy!!!

Da da da, ta ta ta, bla bla bla

The chirpy little Jiya added a few consonants today to her tiny repertoire of oohs and aahs :)

Monday, December 10, 2007

Jiya oh Jiya...

... How I wish time would stop right here, with you being just the perfect size for our hugs, the perfect sight and a stunningly lovely one at that for our eyes, the perfect sing song voice which is music for our ears, the perfect baby smell which pleases the olfactory nerves like nothing else does. To top it all you are so generous with your hugs and kisses for us, Wow! we can't believe you already know how to take out that 'puchhh' sound too when you open your mouth the widest you can and scoop in our cheeks. Not to forget the "You are the best mom/dad/bhaiya in the whole world" looks you give us when you think we are coming near you to play with you. Of course we have to stop right there to do just that. Everything else can wait. We are head over heals in love with you, our gorgeous little darling. We love it when you roll over and over till you find yourself stuck in a corner and then cry for help as also when you scream to be picked up and sit with us at the table for the meals and actually force us to feed you bites of chapati, aloo, dahi, chicken even. Yes my dear, 5 months and you have had it all. Another favorite is bouncing on mommy's knee on 'The Grand Old duke of York' or watching her perform 'Tick tock I am the little cuckoo clock' for your pleasure or better still bhaiya dancing just for you on 'Lets get on the bus'. And we love to do it all for you our sweety pie. Cuddling you and squeezing you close and rocking you are our favorite activities these days. We are enjoying you so very much.
Well darling, just felt like penning down all that you are upto these days, hoping I'll be able to relive these moments by reading about them.

I am a busy boy!!

My day begins with beating eggs and toasting the bread for breakfast.

Unloading the dishwasher and stacking the dishes comes next!

I sweep the floors and make sure to leave no corners unbroomed!

Laundry comes next on my list of tasks. Sorting whites and colors is what I have to pay special attention to.

Chopping onions and tomatoes for the meals! Heating up the dishes before serving is one of the easy ones!!

I know you are exhausted just by looking at me work so hard. But that's just half the day!

The games begin!!

Suddenly the angel of the house dons a naughty smile
is all set with antics to beguile,
Has a teasing twinkle in her eyes
charms us with her gurgles and sighs
In being perked up high she takes delight
and flails her arms like a bird in flight
A tummy rub, a nice warm tub
are a few favorites of our beloved cherub!!
Blows out rasberries, laughs out loud
To now leave her in the room alone, we are just not allowed.
Brings her feet together and grabs them tight
Oh that toothless grin makes the whole house bright!

Look who's talking!!

The age old adage about girls being more talkative and boys more active holds true for our kids at least. Vansh was much more active at 2-1/2 months and Jiya is much more responsive and talkative. Check out the video - I know its kind of dark but the lady wants to chatter away at night-time :)
